Insider tips: How Best to Store Maple Syrup
We’re going out on a limb here, but we probably store more maple syrup than you do. After all, we have a warehouse, a commercial kitchen, and a retail store. There is pure Vermont maple syrup in all of it. Hundreds, often even thousands, of gallons.
So, yes, we know a thing or two about how to store maple syrup. We have made some missteps, but in the decades that we have been making syrup, we have figured out the best ways to keep syrup fresh and delicious for months at a time. And we’d like to share them with you.
Here’s a simple guide on the best ways to store pure Vermont maple syrup in your kitchen:
Refrigerate or Store in a Cool, Dark Place
When you receive your syrup, store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and any heat source. While maple syrup is naturally shelf-stable, refrigerating it or freezing it can significantly extend its shelf life. Refrigeration helps maintain and preserve flavor and color.
The best way to maintain the freshest syrup is to take the amount you will use for several weeks and store it in a virgin canning jar – one never used before. If you have purchased a larger container and have room, the remaining syrup in the jug can be stored in the freezer. When you are ready to refill your glass container, simply take the jug from the freezer, place it in the sink, and let it set for 10 minutes. This short amount of time is all the thawing required. Fill the smaller jar, cap the jug, and place it back in the freezer.
Keep the Bottle Tightly Sealed
Once opened, always ensure that the lid of your maple syrup bottle is tightly sealed after each use. Exposure to air can cause the syrup to oxidize, leading to a loss of flavor and a darker color.
Avoid Contaminants
To prevent contamination, use clean utensils when dipping into the syrup. Avoid double-dipping or using utensils that have come into contact with other foods.
Check for Crystallization
If your maple syrup develops crystals, don’t worry! This is a natural process that occurs when the sugar content becomes concentrated. To dissolve the crystals, simply place the bottle in a pot of simmering water for a few minutes, stirring gently.
Consume Within a Reasonable Timeframe
Even with proper storage, maple syrup does have a shelf life. While it can last for several years, it’s best to consume it within a reasonable timeframe to enjoy its optimal flavor and quality.
